Eighteen years in the education business teaches you one thing.
Every parent who sits across from me has already done the research. They’ve looked at rankings. They’ve read the placement brochure. They’ve asked the counsellor for the average package. They think they know what they’re deciding.
They usually don’t.
Not because they’re careless. Because the thing they need to know isn’t in any brochure.
Here are three things I wish I could put in front of every family before the form gets signed.
The hiring filter tests for something the syllabus never built
Let me tell you what round one of a tech hiring loop actually looks like.
It’s not an aptitude test. Not a multiple-choice screen. The real filter, the one that eliminates most candidates before anything else, is a question. Sometimes asked by a person, sometimes embedded in the structure of the interview itself.
The question is: show me something you built, and walk me through every decision you made.
That’s it. That’s round one.
Students who have something real to show, a project they shipped, a codebase they own, an outcome they can explain end to end, move forward. Students who haven’t built anything real, who covered the curriculum and can pass a quiz but never shipped anything, get filtered out before the technical questions even begin.
Here’s the thing. That question is not a knowledge test. It’s a doing test.
You can’t prepare for it the week before your interview. You build for it across four years, or you don’t build for it at all.
I’ve sat in enough hiring rooms to know this isn’t a new trend. But families choosing a B.Tech programme today are not asking whether the programme builds doing. They’re asking about rankings and average packages. Those are different questions, and the first one is the one that matters.
When you’re evaluating a programme, ask what a student actually produces in Year 1. Not what they study. What they ship. What they can walk into a room and put in front of someone who wasn’t there.
That answer tells you whether the hiring filter is going to be a wall or a door.
The ceiling is the wrong number to look at
Every placement brochure leads with the highest package. The most impressive recruiter. The most dramatic story.
That’s not the number you should be looking at.
The number that tells you something real is the floor. What did the programme produce for the student who wasn’t the outlier, who worked hard, who wasn’t the hackathon winner, who just showed up and did the work for four years?
That’s the real question. Most brochures don’t answer it.
The Kalvium Batch 2026 outcomes were 82.40% placed as of March 2026. Median package: ₹16.5 LPA. The floor was ₹15 LPA.
The figure I keep returning to is the floor. ₹15 LPA is what the programme delivered for students who were not the outliers. The ceiling is ₹36 LPA, and that’s someone’s child too, and their story matters. But the floor tells you what the design produced across the board.
Sector spread matters too. The 2026 batch placed across AI and Data (19.4%), IT Services (17.7%), SaaS (16.1%), HealthTech (12.9%), and FinTech (11.3%), among others. A programme with placements concentrated in a single sector is a concentration risk. If that sector slows, the whole picture changes. Spread across nine or more sectors is a signal about how the programme prepared its students, not just where they happened to land.

Formation happens in Year 1, not Year 4
This one surprises parents most.
It also has the most practical implication for which programme you choose.
A family makes a four-year decision at admission. But the person who walks into the hiring room doesn’t form uniformly across those four years. The habits that matter most, coding discipline, the ability to explain your work clearly, the confidence that comes from having shipped something real: these build through daily practice in the first year, or they build poorly.
A programme that doesn’t ask for anything real until Year 3 is making a design choice. That choice says: we’ll let the first two years be preparation, then we’ll introduce the doing. The problem is that by Year 3, most of the formation is already done. The habits are set. The relationship with difficulty is established. And the student has two years left, not four, to build what the hiring room is going to test for.
I’ve watched this pattern across tens of thousands of students. Venkat and I previously co-founded FACE Prep, working with 2,000+ institutions across India. The students who came through intact, the ones who could do the job and explain what they’d done, were almost always the ones who’d been asked to build things from the beginning, not the end.
Kalvium students ship working software before the end of their first semester. That structure is a bet. It says: the person who walks into the hiring room in Year 4 is the product of every year before it. So start the doing in Year 1.
The three questions worth asking
I’ve sat with thousands of families at this decision. The questions they ask, about rankings, about brand, about average packages, are the questions that feel safest. The answers fit into a table. They’re easy to compare.
But those aren’t the questions that will tell you whether the programme produces the person you’re hoping for.
Here are the three that do.
First: what does my child actually do in the first year? Not what they study. What do they ship? What can they show at the end of Semester 1?
Second: what gets assessed? Exams only? Or also the work they produce, the code they write, the projects they complete?
Third: what happens when they fall behind? How does the programme notice? How quickly? Who intervenes?
Those three questions don’t fit in a brochure. But they’ll tell you more about the four years you’re paying for than anything else you’ll find online.
